As part of a recent accessibility upgrade at Trinity College Dublin, dormakaba was appointed to provide contemporary and discreet swing door operators and sliding door components for several buildings across the historic campus. As a global leader in smart access solutions, dormakaba could provide the necessary products and expertise to ensure the campus complied with Part M of the Irish Building Regulations – as well as achieve appropriate aesthetics. Notably, the project represents the biggest single automatics contract for dormakaba Ireland to date.
One of the oldest colleges in Ireland, Trinity College campus in Dublin’s city centre boasts more than 220,000m2 of building space, with a combination of historic listed buildings and modern facilities. As part of a wider refurbishment scheme, funding was made available to upgrade doors across the site to bring the buildings in line with Part M of the Irish Building Regulations.
Importantly, compliant products were needed that would not interfere with the fabric of the building and also complement the mixture of modern and period interiors. dormakaba products were specified by Quilligan Architects. The products provided the necessary reliability, clean and simple aesthetics and could also integrate with the existing standalone access control system in the student accommodation blocks.
Low energy swing door operator units were fitted to eight areas on the university campus including the Botany Bay, Goldsmith Hall and Front Square student accommodation blocks as well as the College Atrium and Academic Registry Building.
Additionally, due to restricted space, the college required an automatic sliding door solution in its Respite Room that could help maximise room space by sliding back into a disguised recess. As such, the college specified dormakaba’s CS80 Magneo automatic sliding door. Magnetically driven and silent in operation, the sliding door operator offers minimum visual interruption with an ‘in-wall’ mounting option for a flexible and discreet design.
“We have worked with dormakaba numerous times before on other projects and have always been pleased with the reliability of the products and quality of service,” said John Sweeney, Senior Contracts Manager at Collen Construction. “Coordination between ourselves as the main contractor, dormakaba, and the university’s estates and facilities team were key to completing the project to the client’s expectations and avoiding disruption to the lectures or student accommodation.”
In addition, dormakaba has also secured the maintenance contract for all automatic and swing door operator units on the campus. Regular maintenance from a specialist can help to ensure on-going compliance as well as system longevity to validate insurances.
