Icopal Parabit Solo specification helps Kier complete Garnock Academy on schedule

The construction of a new education campus on a green-field site in North Ayrshire has brought together two existing schools, with the project having been completed to program despite challenging weather conditions for much of the time: thanks in part to the specification of an Icopal roofing system under a supply chain partnership agreement with main contractor Kier Construction.

Garnock Academy in the village of Kilbirnie, nine miles from Largs, has been built to accommodate the 300 primary and1200 secondary school students in modern and sustainable facilities, which also include a six-lane swimming pool. While Kier Construction led the scheme, the Glasgow office of JM Architects was responsible for much of the design work, and Briggs Amasco was the member of Icopal’s installer network which laid 5,000 square metres of Parabit Solo, liquid applied membrane.

Briggs Amasco Branch Manager, Raymond Wright, reflected: “Kier specified Icopal for the entire academy building under their framework agreement with the manufacturer. We were on site from November of 2015 through to the following March, the project went well given the challenging weather of November and December 2015. It is the first time we have used the Parabit Solo system, but we found it was good to work with and bonded well.”

Kier’s Design Manager for the project, Ian Atkinson, added: “Everyone is very pleased with Icopal’s performance because we are using the company again for the next four projects we have in the pipeline across Ayrshire. The manufacturer’s systems offering high performance and a long guarantee period, as well as good technical support.”

In fact technical back up both during the design and as work on site progressed were paramount to ensuring the installation progressed smoothly.  And while Parabit’s performance characteristics met all the criteria for the contract – including all the environmental considerations – Icopal also had to ensure delivery deadlines were strictly adhered to.

Parabit Solo is a very user-friendly and economic system that has been developed to offer optimum protection for concrete roof decks.  Crucially it is a self-healing system which, when applied by a member of Icopal’s national installer network such as Briggs Amasco, can offer a 20 year insurance backed guarantee.

Applied using a mix of hot melt and traditional felt pour and roll methods, it can be used as a single or two coat (Duo) treatment and is suitable for the installation of green roof, plaza and inverted coverings. In this case, however, the Parabit Solo and the insulation have just been covered with standard ballast.
